OVERVIEW
The Lake Churup day hike is a popular trek as it is often used for acclimatization, without having to venture too far out from the city of Huaraz.
The trek begins from Pitec, located about an hour’s drive east of Huaraz. From Pitec, it is a steady but challenging ascent to Lake Churup, as it involves an altitude gain of 600m/1,969ft (with the terrain getting steeper as you approach the lake). As such, we would not recommend this trek if it is the first trek you do upon arriving in Huaraz.
Upon reaching your destination, you are rewarded with tranquil views of the beautiful Lake Churup and its famous clear blue waters against the backdrop of Mount Churup, an imposing mountain with a peak of 5,493m/18,022ft.
